Sir Rory is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the Clinical Trial Service Unit at University of Oxford, head of the Nuffield Department of Population Health and a fellow of Green Templeton College Oxford. He is also the chief executive and principal investigator of UK Biobank, a long-term study of 500,000 people to investigate the development of diseases. Sir Rory has been instrumental in the development and delivery of large, randomized clinical trials, including the International Studies of Infarct Survival trials into emergency treatment of heart attacks. These trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of lifesaving drugs such as streptokinase, aspirin, and statins, which have saved countless lives all around the world. In 2022, he was honoured with the Ron Haddock International Impact Award for his ground-breaking research into cardiovascular disease and stroke at the American Heart Association’s National Volunteer Awards. In particular, he was recognised for his ground-breaking discoveries that have revolutionised cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment. In 2011, he was knighted in the New Year Honours awards for services to science. Sir Rory was appointed a fellow of the Royal Society in 2015 and fellow of the Academy of Medical Services in 2004.
