Andy Piper is a globally respected automotive safety leader whose career spans nearly four decades and three continents. Beginning at the Motor Industry Research Association in 1986, he built his expertise from the ground up, contributing to early side-airbag innovation, aircraft seat safety certification and the reconstruction of major transport accidents. His nine years at MIRA shaped his engineering discipline and moral commitment to saving lives.
In 1995, Andy joined Saab, where his significant influence contributed to the transformation of the side-airbag programme for the Saab 9-3, delivering the first vehicle to achieve a full green Euro NCAP side-impact score. After over 15 years with Saab and General Motors, he had established himself as the trusted problem solver for complex safety and engineering challenges. This influence led to the strengthening both of technical standards and organisational leadership.
In China, Andy led safety and homologation for a new automotive start-up. Within three years, he delivered the first Chinese-developed vehicle to achieve a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
Andy’s career has been a testament to his dedication in advancing vehicle safety worldwide.
