Nicola’s life fell apart when her 14-year-old daughter, Megan, took her own life six years ago. Since then, she has campaigned tirelessly to help other young people and their families who suffer from mental health issues.

She set up the Megan’s Starr Foundation as she was determined no other young person should feel they have no choice but to end their life. Nicola also wanted to provide support for parents who had concerns about their children and to raise awareness of teen suicide.

The Foundation concentrates on providing help, advice and support to a variety of people from a range of social backgrounds who are struggling with their mental health and well-being. It is unique in that each member has been through something that has changed their lives irreversibly, so are in a strong position to offer compassion and empathy.

Members of Nicola’s charity have had first-hand experience of loss, mental health, special needs, trauma, PTSD and sexual discrimination. Each sought solace in different ways which is why Megan’s Starr Foundation doesn’t use generic booklets or follow a particular theory.

Nicola has recently graduated with a BSc Honours in psychology and was also presented with the prestigious University of Essex Alun Jenkins Memorial Award after being chosen out of 6,000 other students, in recognition of her work.
